How do I find a Digital Music Notebook title?

From this website, there are three main ways to find titles you are looking for: you can search the database, browse by artist, title, instrument, et cetera, or take advantage of our featured titles. NOTE: If you have upgraded to DMN 3.0 from an earlier version, please note that finding and purchasing titles occurs on this site exclusively. DMN 3.0 does not support a "Store" view within the player itself.

How do I use the search and browse options?

A search box is always present at the top of this site. To search, enter a keyword or two, and select whether you are searching for a particular Artist, Title, or Keyword. By Selecting "Keyword", you can use a wide range of criteria for your search. Examples of valid search criteria are:

  • Author name (e.g. Mozart)
  • Instruments used (e.g. guitar)
  • Style of music (e.g. jazz)
  • Specific tutorial subjects (e.g. scales or chords)
  • Title specific features (e.g. with tablature, C#)

After clicking the "Go" button, you will be presented with summary information for each title that meets your search criteria. You can filter your search results the search using the advanced search options displayed above the results.

You can also browse for lesson books or sheet music specifically by using the store menus. Placing the mouse over either "Sheet Music" or "Lesson Books" will display a list with all of the sub-sections for the respective item ("Sheet Music" will contain "Artist" and "Author" for example). After you have selected your desired sub-section, you will be presented with a list of corresponding categories. Selecting a category will produce a list of all relevant titles. Exploring the list in this way can be useful if you require inspiration or cannot think of a specific title that you wish to search for.

How can I preview a Digital Music Notebook title?

Digital Music Notebook allows you to access free previews for any and all available titles. Previews are delivered digitally to your computer without any cost or obligation to purchase. You can preview as many titles as you wish.

Once you have chosen a title to evaluate, click on the “Preview” button and wait a short time while the preview is downloaded to your computer. Why are some of the Digital Music Notebook player's features disabled when I load a particular song?

Though all of Digital Music Notebook's tools and features should be available if you are using a standard "Sheet Music+MIDI" Digital Music Notebook song, for other content such as lesson books, some features may be disabled. For example, Pro-Authored MIDI songs (Yamaha Music School songs) may not be fully compatible with the transpose, karaoke and mixer features.

Why am I receiving the error message, "Failed to connect your keyboard, please check that your keyboard is connected, turned on, and selected from the 'Setup MIDI Device' menu?"

When I try to install Digital Music Notebook, my virus protection software says that the the program has a virus. What should I do?

Some virus tracking software has identified a file necessary for the Digital Music Notebook player as a virus infected file. However, this file is not infected and will not harm your computer. If you receive a message that the DMNPE.DLL is infected, you can safely ignore it and continue installing and using Digital Music Notebook as you normally would. To avoid receiving this message, please make sure that your virus program's virus definitions are up to date.

Since the file identified by the virus software as an infected file only exists in version 2.5 of the Digital Music Notebook software, you can also reinstall an earlier version to avoid this problem. If you would like to download and install this older version you can do so here.

I am using Windows Vista, and the Digital Music Notebook program crashes whenever I try to open it. Why?
