Connect Your Keyboard

The Digital Music Notebook player is designed to support a connection to any General Midi enabled instrument. Some instruments, however, may not be able to make full use of all of Digital Music Notebook's features. Yamaha keyboards provide the highest level of compatibility with the Digital Music Notebook player.

To connect your keyboard to your PC and Digital Music Notebook:

  1. Install Drivers:

Make sure you have installed the latest drivers for your MIDI or USB-MIDI connection. You can download the latest USB-MIDI driver for Yamaha keyboards here. Yamaha driver installation instructions can be found here.

  2. Connect your instrument:

Physically connect your keyboard to your computer. For detailed information about how to connect your keyboard to your computer, please check your instrument's owner's manual. Yamaha keyboard owners can download owner’s manuals in PDF format from the online library here.

  3. Setup your keyboard in Digital Music Notebook:

Now that your keyboard is successfully connected to your computer, you will need to make sure it is set up correctly with Digital Music Notebook. To do so, first startup the Digital Music Notebook player, then choose "Setup MIDI Device…" from the "Setup" menu.

In the MIDI setup window, choose the appropriate driver from the pull-down menus titled "MIDI Input device" and "MIDI Output device". The correct selections in these pull-down menus will depend on your settings, but, when using a Yamaha keyboard your keyboard's model name or type may appear in the list (ex. "Digital Workstation", "Tyros2")

Please note:
Because of a limitation in Windows 2000/XP, Digital Music Notebook cannot recognize external USB devices (in this case, keyboards) once the program has started up. To avoid this problem, please perform the steps for setting up your keyboard in this order:

  1. Connect your keyboard with a USB / USB-MIDI cable.
  2. Turn the keyboard power to "On".
  3. Start up the Digital Music Notebook player program.

The following Yamaha keyboard models will be compatible with most of Digital Music Notebook's features:
